It began apparently with Perez Hilton mentioning Adam Lambert new-old single ‘Want’ at his website (‘Glambert World Premiere’).
Later Ryan Seacrest also included the song and the note about it in his blog. The track of the song has been later removed from his site on the request of Sony BMG.
But wait… where is the track coming from? From the new, post-Idol album made in cooperation with 19/RCA? Apparently not.
As we learn from Associated Press:
An album featuring Adam Lambert is coming out sooner than expected.
Songs from the American Idol runner-up will be released this summer by Hi Fi Recordings and Wilshire Records, beginning with the single ‘Want’. A spokeswoman for the label said the tracks were recorded in 2007 and 2008 before Lambert’s rise on the popular Fox singing competition. The album will be titled ‘On with the Show’.
But as we all know
Lambert inked a record deal with 19 Entertainment and RCA Recordings earlier this month and he is scheduled to record that album while on the road with the show’s finalists for the Idols Live Tour. The untitled album is expected for release in the fall.
Confused? YES!
Rob Brunner from Entertainment Weekly explains it a bit better:
Apparently American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert recorded an album in 2007 and 2008, before anyone had ever heard of him. Now, not shockingly, somebody is trying to cash in with these early recordings. A label called Hi Fi Recordings/Wilshire Records has just released a “single,” called “Want,” from the sessions, and an album, ‘On With the Show’, is due out later this summer.
The album is produced by Malcolm Welsford and Mark Endert.
19 Entertainment, which manages Lambert and will license the first “official” album to RCA, had no comment.
And finally we get a statement from Adam himself:
Back in 2005 when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was broke at the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped at the opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio. The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on. I’m thrilled to be working with some of today’s hottest songwriters and producers and can’t wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like.
A very good comment to the ‘Want’ – gate has been made at hitfix.com website, where we read:
The problem here is the song. (…) It’s not horrible by any stretch, just not what you would want to represent you as your first true effort.
The author of the article from Hitfix, Melinda Newman, also reminds that similar situation occured after Kelly Clarkson won American Idol for 8 years ago.

The spokeswoman for HiFi/Wilshire says the tracks were recorded in 2007 and 2008 – but she does not say by whom. How does Dublyn Jones and “December” fit into this? December and Want are the same song, except that the artist for the December duet is listed as Dublyn Jones. You could listen to December here:

December was removed from the above site about 12 hours ago. Why?
HiFi/Wilshire had Adam, didn’t recognize his talent, didn’t do a thing for him, but NOW they want to cash in on his fame? True, we Adam fans are starved for Adam’s voice and will buy pre-Idol stuff, however, the release has to be done properly, not the underhanded way. While Want/December is crappy, (not as crappy as No Boundaries), Adam’s voice is magical as always. This song creeps up on you. Download it for free. Don’t give these bottom feeders a penny.
A word of caution to anybody out there with session work, demos etc.: Don’t mess with our Adam

thanks so much for this additional info about ‘December’ – it makes it even more controversial and pathetic for the producers. Will include it in the post-note. All the best

Hifi just trying to makes some quick bucks with Adam’s old recordings. Even though we love Adam and would like to hear all his material, that is simply not right. Just because he is a celebrity now they want to unearth all of his old songs and create an album nw. We shouldn’t buy that old album to support those buck hungry ppl!!! Can’t wait to buy Adam’s new album from 19/RCA though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
