Hispanic Business about Adam Lambert’s debut album

Hispanic Business took a closer look into Adam Lambert’s debut single/album release and we hope only that they will report about Adam regularily from now… (thanks to @JonesAlexandra for the tip!)

For some reason, the site presents they Adam-Elvis expectations.
In the article from Oct. 31, 2009, American Idol’s Adam Lambert Debuts ‘For Your Entertainment’: Is He The Next Elvis? Joshua Molina writes among others:

Drawing comparisons to Elvis Presley, American Idol’s Adam Lambert debuted his new single “For Your Entertainment,” on “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” Friday morning.
Lambert fans are likely to love “For Your Entertainment.” It’s retro yet original, edgy yet mainstream, and it features his trademark stylistic vocals toward the end of the song.

as well as

Lambert has become the biggest star in the history of American Idol and his new album is among the most anticipated in decades. With a masterful stage presence, wide vocal range, and flamboyant attire, Lambert’s emerged as major breakout star, drawing comparisons to Elvis and Michael Jackson.

And in his article of Nov. 7, 2009, More Disco than Elvis? Adam Lambert’s New Songs Leaked, Molina writes:

Songs from Adam Lambert’s new album For Your Entertainment, are widely available on the Web after Amazon.co.uk posted 30-second snippets from his debut record.
The digital clips offer a window into the sound of Lambert’s first album since his spectacular ride on American Idol this season. He placed second in the popular competition, behind Kris Allen, but has already skyrocketed past Allen in popularity.
Idol’s Lambert will release the full album on Nov. 23 and it is likely to be major smash. So far, the album’s highly produced, disco-tinged sound is dramatically different from his stunning vocal performances Lambert displayed week-after-week on Idol.

P.S. Well, dear Mr. Molina, please don’t expect too much of Elvis in Adam, it was NEVER the meaning. But I bet Adam will survive anyway….

Lambert, Presley, Bowie, transgression and falsetto – by The Baltimore Sun

David Zurawik from The Baltimore Sun has made (on the 15th of May 2009, just discovered by me…) an interesting analysis of the phenomenon of Adam Lambert vs. Kris Allen, comparing their individual appeals.
Zurawik claims that each of them represents ‘an archetype of musical and sexual identity at least as old as television’.

Elvis Presley vs. Ricky Nelson

The icon of that era from which Lambert descends is, of course, Elvis Presley. (…) He was either being kept off network TV altogether – or shown only from the waist up because of the nasty things censors thought his hips were saying to teen girls.
It goes without saying that Presley was a sex symbol, but the difference between him and Ricky Nelson matters – just as it does with Allen and Lambert. Presley was non-parentally approved, bad-boy sex in the backseat of a hot car parked down by the deep, dark river with lots of pelvis-to-pelvis grinding in the midnight hour.

And after this comparison, the author continues to analyse Adam Lambert, comparing him to Jagger, Bowie, Elvis, Prince, Steve Tyler….

Transgression and falsetto

Lambert’s best performances embody that sense of transgression. (…)
And this is where things get most interesting with Lambert. After the sexual revolution of the 1960s, there was hardly an aspect of heterosexual behavior or identity that was widely considered to be transgressive any more. But then came androgyny with Jagger, glitter and glam with Bowie — and whatever with Prince.
Lambert channels all of that, and it is at the heart of what makes him so dynamic to watch onstage. He is a self-contained drama of identity reminiscent of the great Japanese actresses who with each pass of their hand-fans would assume a dramatically different identity.
In the middle of sounding exactly like Steven Tyler on an Aerosmith song, he’ll suddenly soar into a falsetto scream somewhere up in the Holy Land of Patti LaBelle — and he’ll stand there looking contemptuously like he could hold the note forever if he wanted to.

Adam and Elvis – similarities’ search continues

While trying to find some press material about Adam Lambert, I noticed that there are sources which have mentioned the similarities between him and Elvis Presley.
Adam himself seemed to be surprised by them and I personally have an impression that he identifies himself much more with David Bowie.

For the record, below are the sources which point out the Elvis-Adam similarities:

Blueblood.net:

“Adam Lambert performed ‘Tracks of My Tears’ in a sharp pale cool gray suit with a dark shirt and went for a less made-up look with just dark mascara and a rockabilly hairstyle with a clearly intentional Elvis circa 1957 vibe.”

Matthew Garbutt, Conductor of the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops

“He should definitely do stadium concerts. He reminds me of Elvis Presley. He has that kind of attractiveness.”

Also, Elvisblog.net made an article about this issue, citing also a fragment of the book ‘ELVIS – He Touched Me’ by Darwin Lamm, where we read that Elvis actually also wore GUYLINER!!!

One time I came into the dressing room to find Elvis picking at his eyes, or so it appeared. When I got closer, I saw Elvis working on his lower line of eyelashes with a Maybelline eyeliner stick. I asked, “Whatta ya doin’ with that on your eyes?”
“It makes your eyes look bigger,” Elvis told me as he dabbed carefully at his lashes.
“Look around here,” I ordered. Elvis turned his head so I could peer at his handiwork. “Damn! They do look big.”

Introducing a forum for Adam Lambert and Elvis Presley fans

0000211093-79510l_elvis_presley
I’ve got in touch with Carol who is a big Elvis fan and now estabished a forum for Adam and Elvis fans (think definitely you should choose a name for yourself, like Glamvis or similar..joking..)
This is what she told me:

‘I’m a huge fan of Elvis Presley and I could never fully understand what it must have
felt like for those fans way back when Elvis first burst onto the scene but I can
now.

When I first saw Adam Lambert strutting down those stairs dressed in the white
suit singing Feelin’ Good — my jaw dropped. I’ve been hooked ever since.
I’m a 47 year old mum of two grown men but boy I felt like a giddy teenager everytime I
see Adam.
As I was going through the Adam sites one day I read some threads that
were saying Adam was the new Elvis etc…..but on further investigation the
similarities go much deeper.

I’ve brought the best of both my worlds to the Internet
– the first forum for Adam Lambert and Elvis Presley fans together. I’m hoping it’s
going to be a fun place where we can meet and talk about these two hugely unique
individuals. In the words of one of Elvis’ songs — it’s no big thing, but it’s
growing!’

The link is here. Exciting!
