Adam Lambert is merely the latest pop star to link sex with violence

My issue, however, isn’t with the kiss but with the way Lambert has chosen to present his sexuality, particularly in his lyrics. Lambert’s idea of sex is imbued with aggression. It is forceful and sneering and has no issue with holding someone down until they acquiesce. What depresses me is that the 27-year-old singer is just the latest pop star for whom sexuality and violence have become entwined. Rihanna’s publicity campaign for her current album, Rated R, is one recent big-name example, where the singer can be seen barely wearing a barbed-wire dress. This might be her way of contexualising what happened to her in a way that presents her as in control, but it’s still a disturbing set of images to project to your audience.

OUT Magazine about Adam Lambert’s AMA performance

OUT Magazine, that become infamous recently for slamming Adam for not being ‘gay enough’ was quick with the comment on Adam’s performance on AMAs. ON 25th of November they published a note in which we read among others:

Whatever else is being said, whatever recriminations are still being hurled, we were delighted by Adam’s performance at the AMAs on Sunday night. Adam may have dedicated that performance to Out with his upraised finger, but the outrage that followed simply served to clarify our original point. As Adam said in an interview with Rolling Stone shortly after his performance, “I think there’s there’s a double standard going on in the entertainment community right now.” Our point, exactly.
Language is slippery and many commentators mistakenly interpreted the editor’s letter as an attack on Adam for not being gay enough, rather than a critique of the record industry’s conservatism and timidity. It was addressed to Adam, but could have been addressed to any number of celebrities who have been encouraged to limit their exposure in the gay press for fear that it would alienate their wider fan base. We believe that such an old school way of separating gay and straight needs to be challenged by those with the confidence and talent to stand up to the bullies.

And yes, they also seem to get my point that Adam’s finger was directed at them!!!

Adam Lambert featured in Week In Review by E!Online

Adam Lambert Visits CBS "The Early Show"

Week In Review by E!Online features Adam at the position 1 ( published oon 28 Nov, 2009 by Natalie Finn):

The man of the hour this week, for better or for worse, was Adam Lambert, whose undiscriminating use of both male and female private parts while he screamed “For Your Entertainment” at the AMAs got people talking. Not to mention clucking, finger-wagging and grandstanding.

1. Adam Lambert ran amok! The Parent Television Council’s favorite new punching bag went from mildly controversial American Idol runner-up to conservative lightning rod overnight following his any-crotch-goes performance at the 2009 American Music Awards. Other things happened, too, including a posthumous win for Michael Jackson, a Whitney Houston comeback, and another spate of Taylor Swiftian triumphs. Hell, Jennifer Lopez fell onstage! But at this rate, no one’s going to remember anything but Lambert’s closing number, which got him tsk-tsked on The View, dropped by Good Morning America and lambasted by people who still haven’t figured out how to get their poor, impressionable babies to bed by 10:45 p.m. on a school night. Lambert’s supporters have pointed out that Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were selling malleable sexuality in prime-time—usually while wearing even less, and at an even younger age than the 27-year-old suit-favoring stunner—years ago. Lambert himself said it flat out: “I think it’s because I’m a gay male and people haven’t seen that before.

Liberty Counsel fills a complaint against ABC/ by Adam Lambert performance on AMAs – coverage+links

Liberty University:

(Liberty University according to their website is nonprofit litigation, education and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and the traditional family. Established in 1989, Liberty Counsel is a nationwide organization with offices in Florida, Virginia and Washington, D.C., and hundreds of affiliate attorneys across the nation)

Mat Staver*, dean of Liberty University School of Law and founder of Liberty Counsel, appeared on CBS’ “The Early Show” Wednesday morning regarding a complaint Liberty Counsel filed with the FCC against ABC for airing the controversial performance by Adam Lambert during the 2009 American Music Awards.
Dean Staver said on the national television program that Lambert’s performance was shocking and patently offensive. He said Lambert’s performance came without warning and that ABC should be fined for airing the segment.
In the complaint, the performance was called “obscene” and “indecent.” Under the laws regulating televised broadcasts, particularly between the family viewing hours of 6 to 10 p.m., the Federal Communications Commission prohibits obscene or indecent performances. “Liberty Counsel urges the Commission to take action against ABC, Inc., for airing such an outrageously lewd and filthy performance during a show and time period that is targeted for family audiences,” the complaint reads.

The text of the complaint is below:

Fragments of the press release published on Liberty Council homepage:

(Mat Staver is a writer and author of among others book called Same Sex Marriage: Putting Every Household at Risk

Liberty Counsel has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission against the American Broadcasting Company (“ABC”) for airing an outrageously lewd and filthy performance by Adam Lambert on November 22, 2009 during the 2009 American Music Awards.
Prior to going on-air, Lambert explained that his motive went beyond performing. According to the Associated Press, Lambert “wanted to break down a double standard that existed where female performers are often sexually provocative while men don’t do it that often.”
When faced with the opportunity to edit the performance before airing it on the West Coast, ABC’s reaction was to promote Lambert’s indecent acts and actually tease and tout his actions as “what everyone will be talking about tomorrow.” This shows that ABC used Lambert’s obscene sexual conduct and not his vocal performance to promote its show.

Adam Lambert ‘For Your Entertainment’ music video review

by Elena Gorgan, Softpedia blog

Amidst talk of the inappropriateness of his performance at the 2009 American Music Awards, Adam Lambert has quietly released the video for his first single off the debut album, the title song “For Your Entertainment.” With a very goth / punk / 80s vibe to it, the video is the product of a one-day shoot with Ray Kay at the helm, which shows Lambert as the ringmaster of an underground party.
Adam Lambert has repeatedly been described as this generation’s glam rock idol and, for many, his performance over the weekend only comes to reinforce that. With this in mind, the same does this recently released video, as it shows the singer as a true entertainer, of which we have only a handful these days on the music scene. As music critics also point out, the entire video – the party – takes place underground, quite a powerful symbol for the musical revolution the American Idol runner-up has in store for the world.

EW.com duo Michael Slezak / Ken Tucker about Adam Lambert’s performance on the CBS Early Show 11/25/2009

Almost one hour after Adam Lambert’s CBS Early Show on 11/25/09 (see the full coverage here) EW.com is ready with the review of it – in the form of 2 articles by the duo Slezak/Tucker:

Michael Slezak: Adam Lambert rocks CBS ‘Early Show.’ (Surprise! No one gets groped!)

There’s really no other way to score it, seeing how Good Morning America lost out on one charming, cheeky interview and two bad-ass musical performances from American Idol season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert this morning, handing them all over to its rival Early Show because, um, why exactly? Oh yeah, apparently ABC suits didn’t trust the firebrand singer would understand the inherent difference between a 10:55 p.m. performance at a decidedly racy awards show and an 8:30 a.m. gig at a benign, watch-with-your-cereal-and-coffee news program. [Insert eye-roll here.] This isn’t to say I’ve changed my tune on Lambert’s Sunday-night showing. Some 36 hours later, I stand by my contention that his AMA performance of “For Your Entertainment” was a vocal and aesthetic disappointment. But ABC’s finger-wagging disinvitation — “Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning” — seems as disingenuous as it does counter-intuitive.
The good news for the Glambert Nation is their guy sounded terrific on his one-two punch of the heartfelt anthem “Whataya Want from Me” and the effervescent party-starter “Music Again.” (…)
There aren’t many artists on the pop chart today capable of pulling that off live. Thanks, Adam, for reminding us you’re a rare bird indeed.

Ken Tucker: Adam Lambert on ‘The Early Show’ re his AMA performance: ‘I did get carried away, it was not what I intended’

Lambert even has a tendency to divide TV networks. Booked to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America to explain his sexually provocative performance, GMA disinvited him, releasing this statement to EW: “Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning.”
That was strange in itself. Did GMA really think Lambert isn’t canny enough to dial it back for a morning-show interview? A ratings miscalculation, methinks. Anyway, CBS and The Early Show got Adam-as-pussycat, not Adam-as-rebel.

‘Adam Lambert is full of over-the-top contradictions’ – feature by Miami Herald

The Miami Herald’s gay blog featured Adam today in the article Adam Lambert ready to shake up pop world with CD written by Derrik J. Lang.
The author not only comments on the controversial AMA performance but also goes deeper into Adam’s personality and the consequences of his behaviour. Very interesting piece to read, fragments below:

‘Risky Business’?

Lambert raised eyebrows with a saucy Details magazine photo shoot featuring the singer intertwined with a nude woman. Hicklin attacked the spread as awkward, but Lambert contends he was exploring heteroerotism much like many female artists experiment with homoerotocism. Such exposure begs the question: Will all this risque business be risky business?

RCA about Adam

“You want edge,” says RCA Records general manager Tom Corson. “You want an artist who is going to challenge himself as well as his fans and people who may become his fans. You’ve got to hand it to him, so far it’s working for him, but it’s got to come down to the music. There’s plenty of people who have celebrity but don’t have a tenth of the talent of Adam.”

Album and the hits

Lambert’s album is an assemblage of songs Lambert quickly crafted this summer while on tour with his eighth-season “Idol” brothers and sisters. His collaborators include “Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi on the pumping rock tune “Strut,” Lady Gaga on the synth ditty “Fever” and Pink on the power ballad “Whataya Want From Me?” – the next single from his album.
There’s no question Lambert has star power, but so far, his celebrity hasn’t ensured a hit: the first single, “For Your Entertainment,” has debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart weakly at No. 84. Controversy – and becoming a Twitter trending topic after his American Music Awards performance – may help sales.
“People were really drawn to him from everything he was doing on the show,” says Sharon Dastur, program director at pop radio station Z100 in New York. “Now that it’s time for him to be on his own and put out his own music, it’s a question of whether he’s stepping up to the plate. I definitely think ‘Whataya Want From Me?’ is a great way to start.”

Personality full of contradictions

Lambert is full of over-the-top contradictions, and that may be part of his appeal. He’s a punk rocker who’s not angry at the world. He’s gay, but many of his straight female fans readily admit to lusting after him. He doesn’t want to be taken seriously, and he wants to be taken seriously. He is playing the part of a character all while being himself.

Adam Lambert about a challenge of creating his image

“If you’re a new artist breaking, you have more control over your first impression,” he says. “Because of everything I’ve been through, everything I did on ‘Idol’ and all of the press attention, it’s easy to catch people off-guard by whatever choices I make. They have a preconceived notion. It creates a challenge, but it’s one that I’m kind of enjoying.”

Huffington Post comments on Adam Lambert’s AMA performance

2 very different comments from the same media:

Jennifer Vanasco: Why Adam Lambert is hurting guy marriage

And yes, Adam Lambert, your performance on ABC’s American Music Awards this week was not really all that raunchy. (…)
What I’d call it, instead, is misguided.
Here’s my problem.
When you were worried about winning a contest, you didn’t want to openly attest to being gay. BUT, when you wanted to make a splash in public, when you wanted to get noticed – suddenly you were all about gay sexuality.
And what is the mainstream most worried about, Adam Lambert? Why are they afraid of our partnerships, our service to our country, our working lives, our families? They are worried because they think gay life is exactly what you portrayed on the American Music Awards: focused on the kind of sex that turns people into animals, geared toward enticing children (ABC is a network owned by Disney, for heaven’s sake), degrading, rapacious, empty.
(…) Because of people like you, who use sexuality thoughtlessly in order to advance your own agenda, instead of thinking about the very real consequences your actions will have on others’ civil rights.

Jim David Adam Lambert, My Hero

When Lambert said that a double standard exists that allows female performers to give highly sexual performances and not male performers, he’s right. Come to think of it, he wasn’t doing anything that Jim Morrison didn’t do in the late 60s. Was his performance a bit much for prime time TV? Probably. But, as I posted here and here, a lot of negative reaction to Lambert is based on homophobia. Trust me, it is. A brief glance at reader postings on conservative sites such as Free Republic show the most vile, hate-filled antigay comments imaginable that have nothing to do with his performance and everything to do with his sexuality.
Lambert is not only out of the closet, he’s out of the closet and in your face. Rock stars have shown in your face sexuality for years, but it’s never before been so gay. Lambert is unafraid to push this particular envelope. That’s never been done before, especially by an artist at the very beginning of his career. This guy has major, major cojones. He wears more eye makeup than an 80 year old Jewish lady at the Friar’s Club, for God’s sake.
I can’t wait to see him live.
