Sitting on 11th July in Oakland, Adam reminds the very begining of his AI journey…

Yes, it all started right over there, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Sitting here I feel like I’ve kind of come full circle. I kind of wish we were doing this show at the Cow Palace. That would have been perfect.

I drove up from L.A. with a couple of friends and we stayed at my mom’s house in Burlingame. Right now the whole year is kind of a blur. But I was so nervous the night before that I couldn’t fall asleep. Maybe I slept an hour all night. That morning we went over to the Cow Palace and I was so tired I maybe got another hour’s nap while were waiting in line. The first song I sang – not in front of the judges – was (I Make You) ’Crazy’ by Gnarles Barkeley. Remember there are a lot of previous rounds before they advance you to be on camera in front of the judges.
My biggest fear was that they wouldn’t get it. But fortunately they did. When I finally got in front of the judges I sang “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Queen) which is the song they showed on TV.
The funny part is that on TV you see Paula rocking out and she is actually dancing to ‘Rock With You’ not ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ She probably looks a little coo-coo doing that.

Crowd favorite? No secret there, overwhelmingly Adam Lambert with Kris Allen a “sorta” close second. Anytime Adam’s face even appeared on the promo screen the crowd roared. And when he appeared out of a mist and the darkness on stage for his set the crowd of 9,000 went ballistic.
Crowd not-so-favorite? Well, they were polite probably to excess, but Megan Joy was obviously out of her league with this group. Song choice? Presentation? Connection with the crowd? I don’t know, maybe all three, but she would have been better walking around behind Adam if she wanted to hear genuine applause.
As far as the rest of the top 10…
Shockers? Well, there were some.
Shockingly good: Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Michael Sarver.
Shockingly not-so-good: Matt Giraud.
Not-so-shockingly what you’d expect: Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta.
The best: Adam and Kris.
The crowd was mostly very young, but a not-so-small group of 40ish types were in attendance. Not many Boomers. And, oh, yes, there was a group of 10 “50-somethings” in pickup trucks from Gilroy tailgating, grill and all, in the parking lot two hours before showtime.
The venue … Oracle’s stage was fine and as mentioned the production crew top-notch. The sound? Not the greatest, but then again what would you expect from an arena that has held up to 16,000 for concerts this year.
So, was it worth the $69.50 for a ticket five rows from the stage. Well, if you were a season-long devotee of the show, certainly. If you don’t know Adam Lambert from Adam Ant, then no.

On the 12th of July, Jim Harrington from the ‘A+E InteractiveBay Area arts and entertainment blog’ has written the review form the American Idol concert in Oakland, giving Adam Lambert one of the best reviews so far. The article is called Review: American Idols Live! and below there are some fragments concerning Adam:

The “American Idols Live! Tour 2009” features nine vocalists not named Adam Lambert and one that is. (…)
The latter is the person who matters; at least that’s what Bay Area “Idol” watchers have told me repeatedly over the last few months. (…)
The thing is, however, those viewers may just be right this time around.
The one thing that was blatantly evident from watching Saturday’s “Idols” show at the Oracle Arena in Oakland _ one of three tour stops over the weekend in Northern California _ is that the 27-year-old Lambert is a bona-fide star.
No matter what a person thinks of Lambert’s overtly dramatic vocal style _ I, for one, find it more than a tad nauseating _ it’s still nearly impossible to deny his almost limitless potential. Indeed, just how the singer goes about trying to make good on all that promise should make for one of pop culture’s most fascinating storylines over the next few years.
Unfortunately, the rest of the top 10 finalists that performed on this night weren’t nearly as interesting as Lambert.

Peter Hartlaub, Chronicle Pop Culture Critic, wrote at sfgate.com on the 12th July, 2009 his view on the recent concerts in the Oakland and San Jose. He caled his article Wait, who won ‘Idol’ this year? Also-rans woo fans as tour hits Bay Area and one of his first statements was:

Both the fifth and third-place finishers – Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey – could have won in a lesser year (of AI).

And then, in a slightly ironical style, he continued:

The latest American Idols Live concert reflected the new philosophy, offering a gimmick-free showcase for the ten singers. (…) The not-quite-sold-out crowd seemed more subdued than previous shows, with one 15-minute exception. The audience made it clear that in the Bay Area, second-place finisher Adam Lambert was the majority choice. The androgynous, Bjork-like power singer didn’t disappoint, giving the most memorable performance – justifying the crowd’s decision to stand for every one of his songs, while sitting through most of Season 8 winner Kris Allen’s performance.
Lambert came out dressed like he should have been in a dune buggy chasing Mel Gibson across the Australian Outback, and followed Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” with a medley of David Bowie songs – complete with a fake British accent. But it was still the low-key Allen who flirted with self-parody. As he tinkled the piano to Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” it sounded instead as if he might be trying to cover Dana Carvey’s “Choppin’ Broccoli.” (Look that one up on YouTube, kids.)

On Friday, I went out to Sacramento early so that I could meet all my new Glambert friends and be at the buses in case the idols came out. I took pictures with Sarver and Matt and saw Kris (but he didn’t come to me). The concert was fantastic of course! But nothing compared to last night in Oakland…

To start, we went to the official Meet & Greet, which is really just a sign and slide. We were taken into a room and all of the idols were lined up along the table and they just signed the group photo and slid it along the table. When I got to Adam, all I could say was “You are so awesome!”. And then I started talking to Sarver, who was sitting next to him. I asked about his foot, and Adam looked up at me, surprised because that I knew about it. Sarver asked how I knew about it and I told him that I had taken a picture with him at the buses in Sacramento and he took another look at me to see if he could recognize me. I made a comment like, “obviously, I’m so memorable!” And both he and Adam laughed. Then I had to keep walking. It was exciting to be so close to Adam, but only a taste of what was to come later!

Of course the concert was fantastic! Once again I was in 17th row center on the floor and had a perfect view. Megs (my new BFF!) and I danced the night away! Fellow Glambert’s Mary and Ruth were also at the concert (separately), so I was able to go up and chat with both of them at the intermission. I have the best new friends from the boards!! After the concert, we put on our official “after party” stickers and went over to wait in the holding area. I thought we would be there forever! One cool thing is that Adam’s mom, Leila, was waiting there too. Megs and I went over to talk to her. Of course I was gushing about how wonderful her son is and how proud she must be and what an awesome mom she is. She was so sweet! She asked our names and was really chatty. Of course we took pictures with her. I told her I couldn’t believe that she had to be out with all of us in the stupid waiting area and she said she didn’t know why either but that it was okay and she just laughed.

Finally, they told us to get in line and we were off to the after party! When we walked in the room, all the idols were just in random places in the room with small crowds around them. We didn’t see Adam at first, so we went over to Matt. We took pictures with him and chatted with him for a while. Then we went over and took a picture with Anoop. He was not very talkative at all. Then we decided we had to find Adam so we started walking around the whole room and finally found the crowd. When we got up to him, we all had him sign our Rolling Stone. He asked our name, which was super nice! Then he took a picture with each of us. Obviously words cannot express the amazingness of this man! Hugging him was the greatest experience of my entire life! He looks deep into your eyes when he talks to you. I told them how wonderful he was in the show and how much I love him and he just kept saying thank you. And after snapping a picture he shook his fists a little bit and said “YAY!” Next we walked over to Kris and he is an absolute sweetheart. We took pictures with him and he signed the picture I brought. I told him how much I loved the new song better than No Boundaries and he laughed and said “no kidding, same here!” We were laughing and talking about how lame NB is. I also met his wife, who is super sweet. Then we went to find Allison. FYI — she is extremely immature. In fact, she was pretty obnoxious to everybody. I’m not surprised, based on her tweets. Don’t get me wrong, she has an amazing voice and did a great job in the concert. And she is very nice. But she definitely needs to be coached on professionalism! I went over and took a picture with Lil and talked to her for a while. I was b****ing to her that nobody would get up and dance during her rockin’ set and she told me she can’t understand the crowds either. She is extremely nice and beautiful!

Okay, so here’s the deal. I looked at my camera and saw that for my first picture with Adam, I was freaking out because I looked like a fat cow!  So of course I had to go back! This time I had him sign my wicked program. He was shocked when he saw it and said “wow, haven’t seen this in a while!” Then I took my second picture (another hug — yes I was DYING!) And this one came out really good!

Adam disappeared before everyone else, probably to go hang out with his mom and friend. Because I know he didn’t come out to the buses until much later than the others. We did not feel rushed at all. We got to talk to the idols as much as we wanted to (except the rock god of course!), which was really surprising! BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!!

Once I got inside, I went straight to the souvinear stand because what is a real concert experience without wasting your money on stuff you’ll never use? The lines were long so I spent a lot of time staring at what people bought. For those who bought t-shirts, they mainly bought, or were talking about buying, the black group t-shirt. I think the most interesting part is watching what solo photos were selling. It was mainly Adam and Kris ones going and then I saw one person buy a Danny one only. The most interesting part is that those who bought Adam ones only bought Adam while for those that bought Kris, they bought either an Adam, Matt, Danny, or Anoop along with it. (…) After that, I went to my seat which was located on the side that was closest to the stage. I’m quite a few rows up but is still super close to the stage. The place isn’t exactly full since the second level had some empty seats. Basically the first few rows were filled but the back half of those rows were all empty, so I would say the place is maybe at 85% capacity? That or I suck at guessing numbers. Around me, there were 2 older ladies talking about their love for Adam, but the funny thing was that the friends that they were with were fans of Kris. I told them I really loved Kris and Adam too and the Adam fan says that she likes Kris too because Adam likes him. I’m laughing in the inside right now because I think it’s kinda cute and then I talk to her friend who likes Kris and she tells me that she voted for him and was happy that she won but she also likes Adam too. Kradam is everywhere.

Huge! cheers for Adam- and he gets the biggest reception for Whole Lotta Love. I think most of the floor was standing for his whole set but people on the sides got up and sat to correspond with fast/slow songs. I loved his Whole Lotta Love becuase I’m a fan of the rockier songs that he does. I don’t really know the “Starlight” song but he shows off his amazing vocal range in this. The only weird part was the ending but I think it’s only because I’m unfamiliar with the song. He ends with the word “hold” and then it’s kinda an abrupt stop and then he goes into Mad World. I think I need to just check out the original version or maybe I was just too busy being excited to pay attention that much? The “Slow Ride” duet was really good and him and Allison have a ton of chemistry on stage. At one point he grabs a towel and wipes the floor with his foot, but it’s all done in sync with the song so he’s got skills! Then his Bowie medley begins- his dancing was pretty slinky and the ladies loved it! Loud screams when he took off his jacket(!) and he definitely beats Danny in executation of removing the jacket. I actually did not see the bra being thrown on stage, but did see Adam pick it up and throws it back into the audience. Maybe because it’s the second time it’s happened, it’s not as exciting anymore- haha. My cousin’s fave song was Mad World but did not like the rest of the set much, mainly because she did not like the songs. She still loves Adam though, as do I because even if he does songs that people might not know, he can freaking sing his face off! (Sorry, Randy popped in my head as I was typing this.) My fave song he did was Mad World- I thought I would be sick of it because I watched him perform it on all the shows but nope, I still love him on it!

As we waited for the show to start, they played the various Ford commercials the Idols made on the show, music videos from past idols, and introduced each idol we were about to see on screen in between the music vids. Every single time Adam’s face would appear on screen, people would start screaming as if he had just walked out on stage. And he’s the only one the crowd did that for. In one of the ford commercials, they showed a clip of his eyes for about 3 seconds & it was like the arena was going to explode. the crowd reaction he had, even before appearing, was rediculous & I loved it! Even before the show started, it was quite obvious who the real winner really was. From then on, the night felt like it was all leading up to Adam.

There was a 20 minute intermission until the real show was about to start. My mom, Alyssa, & myself wandered around the arena. Good thing Liss has been to 500 billion Warriors games & knows that place prettttty well or else we would’ve been SO lost!

My mom asked the lady in the elevator if she could get her backstage passes to meet Adam. The woman replied & said “No, but If you do get backstage, please come find me!” There really were A LOT of middle aged women there for Adam. Well… there were a lot of people from every age group, gender, race, & religion there for him actually. Out of all the people I talked to, every single one of them was an Adam fan. Some were Adam/Allison fans. Some Adam/Kris fans. But I didn’t talk to/overhear/observe anyone was not there for Adam. The vibe in the arena was Adam & the whole show was just counting down the songs until it was his turn.

(…) The Second Act came, and first to go was Allison Iraheta. She was amazing. I was really impressed by her overall performance, and it was the first time I actually forgot about Adam & was focused on her. She’s definitely going to go far, and it was the first time all night someone actually put on a good show.

(…) While Danny was singing, the majority of people were sitting down. In fact, the majority of people in the Arena had been sitting down for the entire show. But when Danny’s set went black & people knew Adam was next, every single person in the enite arena was on their feet. Even if you weren’t an Adam fan (lol ya right) you would’ve had to stand up or you wouldn’t be able to see anything.

The lights started flashing, and people were going completely crazy. His name flased in red up on the screen. Lights & sounds & explosions were happening every which way, and a layer of smoke came across the stage. THIS WAS THE MOMENT EVERY MAN, WOMAN, AND CHILD HAD BEEN WAITING FOR. IT WAS NOW TIME FOR ADAM LAMBERT GIVE A WHOLE LOTTA LOVE TO THE PEOPLE OF OAKLAND.

A guitar playing “Whole Lotta Love” started up. People got even louder as even more smoke appeared. Adam walked out onto the stage wearing his amazing blue leather jacket with amazing sharp objects attached all over it. He had on the glitteriest makeup & the tightest pants. He knew that he had comple control over every single living thing in that arena, and he worked that stage better than anyone. He started singing and his voice was pure amazement. Even though there were screams loud enough to break glass, I could hear him perfectly. His voice was absolutely amazing coming through my tv set, but it was even better live. It no longer felt like a little teenage girl’s stupid pop concert. It was a pure rock show, and he was definitely not shy in showing us his scandalous moves. He got towards the end of Whole Lotta Love & the arena was still INSANE! He paused all dramatic & what not before singing “WOOOMMMMAAANNNNN YOU NEEEEEEEDDDD……. LOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.” At that point, I couldn’t hear anything. I had no idea if he had already sang the last note because it was soooooooo loud.

Definitely the best part of the night so far, but it was just his first song. There was a lot more Adam to come, and we were alllllllllllllllllllll ready for it.
