(article written by Bill Pinella on pressdemocrat.com, published on the 23th of July 2009.)

Yes, it all started right over there, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Sitting here I feel like I’ve kind of come full circle. I kind of wish we were doing this show at the Cow Palace. That would have been perfect.

I drove up from L.A. with a couple of friends and we stayed at my mom’s house in Burlingame. Right now the whole year is kind of a blur. But I was so nervous the night before that I couldn’t fall asleep. Maybe I slept an hour all night. That morning we went over to the Cow Palace and I was so tired I maybe got another hour’s nap while were waiting in line. The first song I sang – not in front of the judges – was (I Make You) ’Crazy’ by Gnarles Barkeley. Remember there are a lot of previous rounds before they advance you to be on camera in front of the judges.
My biggest fear was that they wouldn’t get it. But fortunately they did. When I finally got in front of the judges I sang “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Queen) which is the song they showed on TV.
The funny part is that on TV you see Paula rocking out and she is actually dancing to ‘Rock With You’ not ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ She probably looks a little coo-coo doing that.

Post-Idol press tour

I didn’t get out in the real world all that much during my stay on Idol. After the show ended, we went to New York for this major press tour, and it was really intense. We did a ton of interviews in three days. We did all these appearances and autograph signings. It was exciting, and it was amazing to feel all the support in New York, but I wasn’t really ready for it. It was overwhelming.

Post -Idol Lambert mania

It can charge you up and make you feel like a million dollars, and at the same time it can make you feel like you got run over by a train. There is so much energy coming at you all the time. In New York, I wanted to just give everybody as much of me as I could because everyone was so supportive and showing so much love.

Overwhelmed vs. thrilled

Whenever I get overwhelmed or a little bit cranky, I tend to go, ‘You know what? Look how lucky you are. You got what you wanted. This is amazing, I have to remind myself from time to time. And when I do remind myself, I’m thrilled.

Taking action

It’s a good and a bad thing. There is no time to really think, and I would like a little more time to think. But I’m so much in my head anyway, maybe just taking action is the best thing for me.

The excerpts on Adam-part are below:

The two biggest stars of the show — winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert — embraced what endeared them to millions of fans throughout Season Eight. “Glambert” was out in full force, with tight pants, his otherworldly wail and a tribute to the original rock androgyne, David Bowie.

In true Robert Plant style, Lambert made his arrival known, punctuating his three-octave howl on “Whole Lotta Love” with pelvic thrusts and microphone straddling, then quickly switched gears for the haunting “Mad World,” showing off his crystalline falsetto against a moody backdrop of smoke and twinkling lights. After reprising “Slow Ride,” his energetic duet with “little sister” Iraheta, Lambert closed his set with a medley of Bowie songs, then sunk down into the stage to the loudest cheers of the night.

Brian Mansfield is the one who is on time with all possible updates from the Idol Tour. That’s so much appreciated!
Already today he is ready with the relations from all the performances shown yesterday in Portland during the 1st stop of the Idol Tour.

These are the excerpts of the part about Adam Lambert:

Adam Lambert finished second? You couldn’t tell it from this crowd, which greets the explosive sounds and strobing lights with shrieks. Adam kicks off his set with Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love, and the stage fills with smoke. He’s wearing a blue-and-black metallic-looking studded jacket that comes down to his knees, along with a sleeveless black T-shirt and black pants. The crowd may have been dancing for Allison and Danny — for Adam, they’re screaming. Suddenly we’ve gone from the world of AC pop into a real rock show.

Second song is Muse’s Starlight, and the six disco balls hanging above the stage turns the Rose Garden into a planetarium. (…) Low-level fog creeps in, as Adam takes a seat on a stool to sing the Tears for Fears/Gary Jules song Mad World. The crowd is still on its feet, and they’ve brought out their cameras — you could practically read in here, the flashes are so steady. Some people are singing along; most of them just look entranced.

The guitarist cranks out the opening chords to Slow Ride start, and the audience knows what’s coming — or, rather, who. Allison Iraheta walks on stage, and the place goes ballistic.

Now, he’s doing the David Bowie medley he promised, which starts with Life on Mars (and the big red planet is behind him on the video screen). As he slides into Fame, the crowd shrieks again, but it’s not for the song: Adam has shed his jacket, revealing the sleeveless T underneath. He’s obviously been working with JaQuel Knight on choreography, too; he’s moving lithely across the stage in a way Idol viewers never saw. The third number, Let’s Dance, assumes a pulsing, throbbing club rhythm under his command, barely resembling the pseudo-horn-band arrangement of Bowie’s original.
He finishes, then descends on the center-stage lift.

Read the whole article and the relations from ALL Idols’ performances on Brian Mansfield’s blog.

Just before the re-airing of the whole Michael Jackson theme show from the last American Idol Season 8 that will be sent on Monday 29th of June as a tribute to the late King of Pop, I take a look back on the press comments after Adam Lambert’s performance of ‘Black or White’.

Just before the re-airing of the whole Michael Jackson theme show from the last American Idol Season 8 that will be sent on Monday 29th of June as a tribute to the late King of Pop, I take a look back on the press comments after Adam Lambert’s performance of ‘Black or White’.

According to mlive.com (by Associated Press):

If the “American Idol” judges have their way, it won’t be curtains for Adam Lambert anytime soon. The 26-year-old theater actor from Los Angeles seamlessly impressed the panel — and eclipsed his 12 co-finalists — with an energized rendition of the tune “Black or White” during Tuesday’s Michael Jackson-themed performance show.

and on March 12, 2009, Arrie Othman writing at associatedcontent.com is sure that Adam will be the next American Idol:

He did it again! On Tuesday night, Adam Lambert burnt the stage with Jackson’s ‘Black & White’. While some of the audience loath his screaming, he seems to get approval from the majority of the audience. It is always not so easy to sing Jackson’s number, but Adam Lambert turned the song into his own, almost rock ‘n roll version of Black & White. He made full use of the stage, establishing contact with screaming fans while singing. Everyone was screaming for more when he stopped.
The best thing about Lambert is him being himself. Unlike other contestants, he didn’t have to put in extra effort, no hairstyle changing, or being a drama queen. He is always natural, and delivers the best performance. If there is an offer from any recording company, he would be the only contestant who is ready and deserves the contract.

Part 1: American Idol: Adam Lambert and some other guy (published on 19th of May 2009

Aaron Wherry begins his report:

And so then there were two. Which is to say then there was one. Just one undeserving contestant with a chance to beat Adam Lambert. Just one undeserving contestant standing between us and a heated debate over America’s willingness to accept a possibly gay American Idol.

It’s Adam Lambert. It’s some other guy. We’re either getting the most compelling Idol in the show’s history or we’re reigniting the culture wars. We can’t lose.

Herein a running diary of this season’s penultimate episode of American Idol. It’ll be like a live blog. Only with the benefit of me having more time to work out the jokes.

8:00pm. Ryan Seacrest opens the show in an expensive-looking suit. Is there anyone in pop culture whose success is more disproportionate to his identifiable talents? He’s a sort of genius.

8:05pm. Our first commercial break and our first Conservative attack ad.

8:09pm. Adam’s up first. In an interview with his parents we learn that he was a troublesome child who screamed a lot. Which is remarkable and telling because that only describes approximately 64% of all infants.

8:10pm. Adam reprises his Gary Jules-inspired version of the Tears for Fears’ classic Mad World. Dry ice and spooky lights. Lambert looks like a cross between David Bowie and the Undertaker.

8:13pm. Randy Jackson gives him an A for Adam. Randy Jackson is basically a Seasame Street character brought to life.

8:15pm. Next up it’s Kris Allen. Apparently he convinced his parents to pay him to sing when he was a child. Which is altogether rather impressive.

8:17pm. Ain’t No Sunshine on the piano. There are a dozen hotel bars in the southeastern United States that regularly feature more interesting performers.

8:18pm. Judges commence over-enthusing about Allen’s performance so as to justify the next 45 minutes and guard themselves against an upset tomorrow night. “You awaken the spirit in all of us,” says Paula. You get the feeling Paula would say the same thing to her Starbucks barista in the morning.

And in Part 2
: American Idol: Kris Alle? Really? (published on May 20th 2009)
he ends his report:

10:01pm. All right. Finally. Here we go. Seacrest is ready to announce the winner. Will it be the obviously more talented, but possibly gay Adam Lambert? Or the entirely unexciting, but probably not gay Kris Allen? Will American overcome its prejudices or lay them bare for all the world to see? Or will they pick a winner based on reasons completely unrelated to sexuality? And how will we ever know either way?

10:02pm. Wow. It’s Kris Allen. And even he seems to feel bad about it. Seacrest tries to save it by bringing Lambert back on stage, but ultimately Allen is forced to sing that song about mountains and hurricanes and dreams and unicorns.

10:06pm. And that’s it. Let the self-loathing, consternation and bitter debate begin! The culture wars are back, everybody! Let’s party like it’s 2004!

Highly recommended reading on a trist and rainy day…

Windy City Times is the only Chicago gay media outlet, published since 1985. It is the city’s oldest gay newspaper and among an elite group of the top gay newspapers nationally.

This article has been published on the 3rd of June 2009 on their website windycitymediagroup.com. The title of it is ‘This is American Idol?’ and it is written by J. Michael Durnil, who had this rare opportunity to be in the Nokia Theatre at the time of the finale show of American Idol Season 8.

His impressions were mixed:

What I know for sure is that any time Adam took the stage the crowd was nearly uncontrollable with their devotion and adulation. The signs for him outnumbered Kris 4-1 … unless it came to the small but disturbingly “knoticeable” Kougars for Kris signs created by those who had stretched the limits of their Orange County bedazzler machines and cricket crafters to make their presence to be known.

It was time. Dim the lights. After a “certified vote” of a record-breaking numbers, the next American Idol is Kris Allen.

What?

The audience was stunned. Even the large screens in the theater seemed to not believe it—it seemed to take a long time to get Kris’ name posted as the winner. His prize—to sing that syrupy hurricanes and windstorms drivel that was the song for the winner. The crowd noise, mostly of disbelief, drowned out whatever he was singing through his painful-to-watch- contortions.

Since we had to leave our phones, camera and anything else in the car, it wasn’t until I fished mine out of the trunk that I was able to post my disappointment and dismay to my face book and twitter accounts. One on my staff in NYC had already sent me an email asking me if I was okay and wondered if I had rushed the stage in disbelief.

My first post was “America got it wrong.”

In the newest (May 28th 2009) issue of RollingStone, Rob Sheffield approaches the phenomenon of Adam Lambert writting the article ‘How Adam Lambert Single-Handedly Saved “American Idol”’. What we read is among others:

Adam Lambert saving American Idol

American Idol is back on top, and it’s all one little black-leather-clad demon prince’s fault. For the past few seasons, Idol seemed to be dying of boredom, but Adam Lambert, a goth studlet with mascara, black nail polish and a falsetto from deep in the larynx of Lucifer, has single-handedly rescued the franchise. He can do sincerity and ridiculosity all at once, exactly the algorithm Idol has been striving for all these years. Lambert combines the different Idol archetypes, delivering the complete star thrill heretofore doled out one sliver at a time.

Adam Lambert ’s personality

Where the hell did they find this guy? There’s a “boy who fell to Earth” quality about him, like David Bowie’s Lady Stardust come to life. It’s a little hard to believe that, until a few months ago, he was toiling away as an obscure understudy in the L.A. production of Wicked. He’s easily the most fun Idol ever, a flam-bam-boyantly queeny California boy (…).

Adam Lambert’s sexuality

We don’t know for sure if Glambert is gay — all he says is he has nothing to hide or deny — but if not, it’s the gayest embodiment of flaming youth by a straight guy since Bowie sold the world. Glambert plays off the new gay stereotype that has been reality TV’s gift to our culture: the hyperfunctional gay dude who has his shit together in contrast to all the neurotic, insecure straight guys around him. (…)

Danielle Berrin from JewishJournal.com has on May 20th written her commentary about American Idol finale pointing out that the show has not been about talent at all. Adam Lambert was far too edgy for American Idol and even his devastating talent could not help him in being crown as a winner.

If it were about talent, Lambert might be the crowning glory of all eight seasons. But the majority of the 100 million votes that ended the Season 8 competition went inexplicably to Allen. Which left many ‘Idol’ fans dumbfounded at the end of last night’s competition. Before announcing the winner, host Ryan Seacrest’s face fell a little. Simon Cowell must have seen this coming, because two weeks ago he told Lambert, “If you are not in the final next week it will one of the biggest upsets on this show.“ But Lambert’s loss didn’t seem to stop Cowell from looking crestfallen, a blow of defeat for the talent purist who insists that ‘Idol’ is about finding the brightest star.

Instead the nation’s conservatives changed the game by voting their conscience, not their common sense. And in the end, ‘Idol’ viewers proved that they’re not that interested in the best singer. They don’t even care about electing a star. All that matters is that they get to worship their Idol, the one who is just like them.

Today I came across a very interesting article – commentary published on May 19 in LosAngelesTimes.com, written by Ann Powers under the title: ‘American Idol’s bigger message’.
It was, obviously written before the results of the American Idol show have been announced but the points mentioned in it are still very much alive.
Ann Powers writes:

Today I came across a very interesting article – commentary published on May 19 in LosAngelesTimes.com, written by Ann Powers under the title: ‘American Idol’s bigger message’.
It was, obviously written before the results of the American Idol show have been announced but the points mentioned in it are still very much alive.

Ann Powers writes:

The two-part finale of hit series “American Idol,” which begins tonight, is the most talked-about thing in television right now, partly because this season’s contenders, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, are exciting performers. But it’s also because they have done something unexpected: Their unlikely friendship has presented America with a new vision of itself, beyond the deepest divisions of the culture wars.

Lambert is a rocker from the liberal urban Southland with roots in musical theater and the Hollywood club scene. Allen is a collegiate evangelical Christian from Arkansas. Lambert has been compared to Queen’s Freddie Mercury and Elvis Presley; Allen recalls John Mayer and the Jonas Brothers.

At a time when change is in the air but the old conflicts over religion, lifestyle and sexuality aren’t going away, this eighth season of “American Idol” is vividly illustrating how people with cultural differences can make beautiful music together.

And Karen Tongson, an assistant professor of English and gender studies at USC gives also her view:

The friendship between the two finalists suggests that tolerance can trump ideology, a powerful sentiment that echoes President Obama’s suggestion that bridging differences could be more effective than trying to eradicate them.

This is part of the spirit and ethos of an America after Obama. His whole rhetoric fits into the desires of our political culture after such a divisive period. And that’s also playing itself out on Idol.
