Adam Lambert’s fans: Gender n’ Age Overview. The Poll!!!

It’s actually pretty boring poll, but at the same time very useful as a base to make any type of glambalysis.

For some time ago I published a blog post called ‘Adam Lambert and the Burning Women’ where I assumed that the most visible group of Adam’s fans are mature women.
I still think so!

But I received a comment from a reader called jools whose position was completely different:

Yeah, you are underestimating Adam’s appeal. Older fans may be more vocal and may also be in a better position to publish articles, but do not assume that he is not quite the teen girls idol. There was a long thread on the official Adam Lambert site that asked peoples ages. There were more teens than any other age group, followed by 20 somethings, then 40 somethings. He appeals to all ages and the ‘he is only for cougars’ argument is just another way to try to knock him.

I certainly don’t want to knock Adam (!!!) but then all I would like to know is the REAL age and gender of Adam’s fans.
So please – place your anonymous vote and spread the word to every Adam’s fan you know to do the same, so we all can get the REAL picture.

Update: the poll is now CLOSED, please see the results, comments and conclusions under this link.

The cougars are embarrassingly vocal about their love/obsession for Adam and their own age. What’s up with that? I mean, I’m happy for you that someone’s getting you excited again but please lmao. I don’t go around saying I’m 23 and going crazy over the guy. TMI. Stuff like “I’m a 50 year old mother of 12 and I’ve never felt like this since Elvis!!! Adam you still do it for me baby. Adam will be iconic!!!!!!” Jesus :X

Makes me CRINGE. And I know I’m not alone. There are over 5000 members over at the snarky comm who feel the same and that’s only ONE online community. All these crazies are the ones who give Adams fans a f-n bad name.

  3. #3 by Sacha - July 4th, 2009 at 13:26

Btw, if you want a more accurate poll, you should spread this around a bit :) For example, there are also a ton of gay (and straight) dudes who also like Adam but don’t know about this site or don’t visit it (I barely come here, was linked via Twitter).

There was a poll done on the AI forums that showed that 58% of those who participated were over the age of 30.

There is an article as well as 92 pages of comments by us middle age women. This should explain his appeal to us.

I’m just out of my teens (20) and I know dozens of girls in early 20’s who absolutely worship Adam. Maybe we’re not being vocal enough and need to get our voices heard more.
My boyfriend just turned 23 and he is also a huge fan – although he loves Adams voice and musical style rather than the HOT, SEXY factor – which is very good news for me :)

  10. #10 by Sarah - July 4th, 2009 at 16:09

I think the older fans might just be more vocal. I’m 15, and I don’t go crazy spreading my Adam-love over the internet…but I definitely love him, and so do all my friends. So, I do think he has more teen fans than you would think…

I am a mature woman & I fit the stereotype – does that make me bad? No – I grew up with Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, George Michael & Michael Jackson – all born performers with great voices – for me Adam is a throw back to that era & makes me feel young again. In any case, age is just a number – it is how you feel inside that counts!

From what I can see so far from the results – Adam appeals to all ages that is what is unique about him!

  15. #15 by circe - July 4th, 2009 at 17:36

From what I’ve seen, Adam attracts babies and on up to the geriatric set. That type of magnetism is not limited to one age group.

    >>I certainly don’t want to knock Adam (!!!) but then all I would like to know is the REAL age

Sorry whatever your name is on here. I’ve already clarified this on IDF – I in no way meant to imply that YOU were knocking Adam – you are obviously an Adam fan, you run an Adam fan site. I was just trying to point out that this is in fact misinformation that people who want to see him fail are touting. As you see, you are getting the real picture and it was my vision.

I would like to point out that what you won’t get from this poll is a reflection of the gender of Adam fans. Whilst I don’t doubt a poll passed around fansites will reflect the level of female support, I do not believe it will give you any real indication of his appeal to males. Males just don’t tend to hang around fansites of individuals very much! Better places to get an indication of male support is checking out comments under news pieces and people following on twitter and stuff. Obviously, Adam has a lot of female support but seriously, if you take this poll to mean he only has female support, you’d be wrong.

Adam Lambert has a fantastic voice and amazing stage presence! He really does appeal to all ages and genders and with the right product, that will only continue to grow away from the AI competition!

    >>There was a poll done on the AI forums that showed that 58% of those who participated were over the age of 30.

And this is another way that misconceptions get started! You do realise that if most <10 year olds don't use the internet, then 10-30 = 20 chances 30 – 70 = 40 chances right? If you are looking for an accurate picture of the age skew you have to have a more even dividing line or look at the individual bands. So far, my comment is completely accurate.

  18. #18 by Ooi from Singapore Glamberts - July 4th, 2009 at 20:07

Hi, I’m talking only on behalf of my members’ demographic in my fan club – the Singapore Glamberts. Surprisingly, Adam cuts across ALL age groups though not gender (we are 99% female). I’ve just recently conducted a census and this is my results: the mean age of our fan club is 26 years old. In terms of number of fans, we have almost even numbers of fans from Teens (13-19yrs old), Women (20-29yrs old) and Cougars (40 and above). The ONLY missing age group in my fan club is the 30-39yrs old – there is only one member is this category, namely me.

Adam’s appeal is quite universal in terms of ages and I believe once his album is out, he will capture even MORE teens and young adults, especially with his sync sounds, and dance tracks etc.

  19. #19 by BJo - July 4th, 2009 at 20:19

Ms Alex, I understand, but there is a negative implication and even fear and hatred of the sexuality of women implied in the term Cougar and in the way it is very often used. For those of us who fought the feminist battles to reclaim a positive perspective of women’s sexuality, we certainly never thought that we would be revisiting this hostility because of age. It’s a matter of respct and self-respect. I have a feeling Adam gets it.

    >>The ONLY missing age group in my fan club is the 30-39yrs old – there is only one member is this category, namely me.

Well if you look at the poll above and also the ‘count’ I made of the thread on the adamofficial site (see the thread on idf), you’ll see the same can be said for all of these ‘polls’! I’m trying to work out why that may be.
I wonder if it might have something to do with parental responsibilities?

bjo I’ve enjoyed reading your comments on the ‘cougar’ issue. I’m a 40 something myself and completely comfortable with my own sexuality (I am a huge slasher for example) but I am in no way shape or form a ‘cougar’ and I resent being labelled and/or feared as such simply because of my age. I’ve never been interested in even meeting any of my idols, let alone throwing my underwear at them or trying to get them drunk to test out their orientation. People are quick to mistake a bit of fun on the internet as somebodies real intention when it comes to older fans.

and trust me, if Adam has to get drunk to make out with women, he’s not bi-curious, he’s just a horny drunk. :D

    >and trust me, if Adam has to get drunk to make out with women, he’s not bi-curious, he’s just a horny drunk

Hehe, I completely agree, but folks are far too ready to take Adam fans too seriously. When the RS article was posted, I saw a lot of ‘bi-curious? time to party’ posts. That stuff was just folks having fun – as is the burning woman festival. To many non-fans, that was just delusional Adam fans not being able to accept the truth! Nonsense. Pretty much everybody knew the truth, next to nobody cared at all.

    >>It appears that Adam’s following is 92% women of ALL ages.

Yeah but like I said earlier, you really can’t get an accurate idea of gender support from fan sites. I’m not saying that females aren’t in the majority, of course they are, but I think men also support Adam – they just don’t hang out at Adam fan sites. You get a lot of ‘I am a 50 year old man and he reminds me of..’ comments under news articles and there is a fair bit of support from the gay community at sites like After Elton. I know my 20 something straight son is going to take me to an AL concert if he ever reaches the UK and actually genuinely enjoys Want, but I couldn’t even persuade him to join the Facebook community because he simply isn’t into ‘fannish’ things!

I agree with person who posted an objection to the use of “cougar” … it is demeaning and sexist and it’s time for folks to eliminate it from their vocabulary (unless i guess if you want to be promoting an offensive and tasteless reality show)

Well, what I saw in the press is that many of the (female!) journalists use this term THEMSELVES! see e.g. in this post http://www.mr-l.org/adam-lambert-and-the-burning-women/ – both examples of articles mentioned were placed in the MAINSTREAM press! Both written by women (about themselves…) I have many more examples like these.
I don’t defend this term at all – don’t get me wrong. But I see a general misunderstanding of the meaning of this term – and still not sure which understanding is correct…

I am 14 year old girl and I realy believe that Adam lambert has a massive appeal to teens. All of classmates love him including a lot of boys. And if it helps, my 42 year old father absolutely loves him because of his charisma and his amazing voice. He will definitely buy his album but, he will never visit any of those fan-sites!

I blame Adam for my desire to take a stand on this point! A lot of groups have tried to diffuse hate speech by co-opting it, but it backfires by keeping it current in the acceptable language…I’m sure we can all think of examples. the main subtext of “cougar” is disapproval and hostility aimed at women, and suppression of feeling freely. One of the great mysteries and blessings of getting older is that we continue to find people our own age attractive. My significant other is my age, but I still find people of ALL ages (and genders) sexy, talented & appealing. Why is that ugly or shameful?

    Hi there,

I think this poll is a great idea… but I might add a trans (Transgender) category. It might not get a lot of hits, but it’s a good idea to have. Not everybody falls in the male/female category…

    Great job and interesting results!

I would just like to say that we should all be united in our love and adoration of Adam, whatever age group. Adam has made music exciting again and I am on the Adam train for the rest of his electrifying trajectory to superstardom. He is by far, the most shining star to ever come out of AI or anywhere for that matter and I am just glad that he has come along in my lifetime.

  32. #32 by Tracy–NOT a COUGAR - July 9th, 2009 at 14:45

I HATE the term cougar. I’m in my 40s, but I’m NOT A COUGAR! Cougars are women of means who stalk young men for sex! For god’s sake, stop labeling us with that term. Why did it have to replace “soccer mom,” which was silly, but at least not full of predatory innuendo. STOP using COUGAR. STOP labeling groups of fans. Isn’t it enough we’re all FANS of ADAM?
