Thanks to David Cook and later Adam Lambert performing on American Idol, the broader audience saw what it really does mean to twist songs , giving the originals complete new arrangements.
But clearly, the question stays unanswered: how do the original authors/performers like the new versions of the songs very often very far away from the original?
Bill Pinella from pressdemocrat.com has written an article on the 24th of July 2009 in Idol Chatter section of the site about Adam Lambert’s vs. Tears For Fears’ Mad World.
Pinella writes:
During a recent performance in Santa Rosa, before heading off for another concert event in Japan, Tears for Fears singer Curt Smith said this before starting his next set: “Here is the original of this song, no matter how others are doing it.”
And then reffers to Adam Lambert’s knock-outing version of this song during American Idol 8
“Mad World” had become one of, if not the signature song for Lambert during the eighth
season of the show’.
And
‘Whether Smith was referring to Lambert or Jules when he made reference to the slower version that night in Santa Rosa, we’ll never know. He was probably referring to both of them’.
Pinella reminds as well what Adam Lambert himself have said about the song:
I have never heard Tears For Fears perform that song. But it’s a very cool version. Tears For Fears are the originals with it. They deserve all the credit for that song. I’m just the new kid on the block with ‘Mad World.’
Read the whole article and compare the three versions of ‘Mad World’ there.
Personally, except from Smokey Robinson’s (standing ovation) reaction to Adam Lambert performing ‘Tracks of My Tears’ I have never heard about reactions of others original authors to Adam’s versions of their songs. Have you?

Curth Smith is following Adam on Twitter. Adam invited him and his family to Idol on finale night.

Actually I think Johnny Cash rolled over in his grave but other than that didn’t have much of a reaction to “Ring of Fire”.

If Johnny Cash rolled over in his grave it was to get a better listen because he would have LOVED ROF.
